WORKSHOP 1: IMPROVISATION IN THE DARK INSTRUCTOR: Robert Lowe Come and experience an exploration into improvisation with increasing levels of spirit as there are decreasing levels of light. You have never seen anything like it and some of it you never will "see" at all. This workshop includes a potential performance oppurtunity in the Robert Lowe Experience. >>More Info WORKSHOP 2: 10 HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL IMPROVISERS INSTRUCTOR: Greg Tavares Greg Tavares (Co-artistic director of Theatre 99 and the Charleston Comedy Festival) has been directing and improvising for over 20 years. He has recognized 10 habits that highly successful improvisers have and in this workshop you will do exercises that help you learn these habits. Wanna know what the 10 habits are? You will have to come to the class to find out. WORKSHOP 3: GROUP IMPROVISATION INSTRUCTOR: Dan Sipp One of the joys of improvisation is collaborating with other players. Each collection of players forms its own identity or "group mind." This collective thinking is often non-liner, so it takes us in directions that a single person couldn't imagine on their own. In this class we will explore how to improvise in a group setting. Every exercise in the course will involve most or all of the students improvising together at the same time. We'll explore how to recognize and create group patterns, when to lead and when to follow, committing to group energy and trusting your fellow players. Invest in the group and it will take you to new places in improv. |
SAT 9/19 10:00AM-12:00PM |

WORKSHOP 1: MEISNER IN IMPROV INSTRUCTOR: Mandy Butler Grounded relationships keep scenes interesting and focused. By engaging your partner, you will also engage your audience. In this workshop, you will employ the teachings of Sanford Meisner to help you connect with your scene partner by listening, responding, and making eye contact. We will also explore the power of touch, while playing with distance between actors onstage. Get ready to get close! WORKSHOP 2: SOLO IMPROV INSTRUCTOR: Jim Karwisch This workshop goes through the thought process of solo performance and focuses on technique and responsibility within your show. Solo workshopping helps improvisers of all levels in their regular 2 person scene-work and group play as well as preparing them for a solo show. WORKSHOP 3: CONFLICT RESOLUTION INSTRUCTOR: John Sexton Focused conflict or dramatic tension keeps improv interesting. Without it, scenes can quickly become shallow fluff. But aimless conflict or argument without resolution is equally frustrating. Whenever conflict exists in a scene, we must demonstrate an intention to resolve it. In this workshop, you'll learn how to both initiate and resolve conflicts to make your scenes emotionally engaging. Clear points of tension also help provide satisfying, cathartic endings for your scenes. WORKSHOP 4: DEATH IN A SCENE - WHAT TO DO? INSTRUCTOR: Mike Leneski Bang! You've been shot, and you're dead! So, now what? What do you do when someone kills you in a scene? What choices do you have available to you? How do you act, react, and stay dead? Do you deny, and say you're bulletproof? Explore options on how to die in a scene, be it by gun, sword, or audience shouting out Die. Audience participation strongly encouraged. WORKSHOP 5: BREAK OPEN THAT BARREL OF MONKEYS INSTRUCTOR: Kit FitzSimons Have you been getting "in your head" during shows? Are you at a loss for what scene "comes next"? Do you find yourself getting "stuck" in scenes you don't want to be in? Learn how to grab onto every exciting idea and catapult your scenes to new heights and new worlds. It's not What If; it's What WHEN. WORKSHOP 6: 10 HABITS OF HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL IMPROVISERS II INSTRUCTOR: Greg Tavares Greg Tavares (Co-artistic director of Theatre 99 and the Charleston Comedy Festival) has been directing and improvising for over 20 years. He has recognized 10 habits that highly successful improvisers have and in this workshop you will do exercises that help you learn these habits. Wanna know what the 10 habits are? You will have to come to the class to find out. (This is a 2hr version of Greg's Friday workshop that sold out in 33min flat!) |
SAT 9/19 1:30AM-3:30PM |
|
WORKSHOP 1: STAGECRAFT AND PHYSICALITY IN IMPROVISATION INSTRUCTOR: Dan Triandiflou Focus on enhancing improvisation by making it more theatrical. This workshop emphasizes how physical offers, embodiment, staging, object work, and creating rich environments minimizes exposition and elevates the immediacy and visual impact of improvisation. WORKSHOP 2: UBER-SPECIFICITY INSTRUCTOR: Tim Orr How do we consistently approach any situation and character that we might be called upon to play in the world of improv with confidence and playfulness? How do we articulate the specifics of being a physicist, a news anchor, a politician, or anyone else without pause or worry? We'll look at some approaches and techniques which will enhance your ability to be super-specific in any situation on stage. Fun stuff! WORKSHOP 3: CHARACTER AND COMMITMENT INSTRUCTOR: Regina Saisi We'll scratch below the surface of character to expand your acting range and break out of your usual patterns and stereotypes and into the truth of the character. We'll diagnosis what your character range is, and help you expand into new and exciting territory with scene work. WORKSHOP 4: IMPROVISING IN STAGE PLAY FORMAT INSTRUCTOR: Dave Dennison & Lisa Rowland Improvising a full-length three-act play has its own set of challenges: only one character per player, only two time jumps and a single location where all the action takes place. We'll explore the commitment to character, timing, fully-realized relationships, vulnerability and emotional change that this exciting format requires. WORKSHOP 5: SELLING IT!! INSTRUCTOR: Meredith Melville What makes music work in improv, theatre or musical improv? SELLING IT! Sell those songs and keep on sellin it! WORKSHOP 6: MOMEMTS OF TRUTH INSTRUCTOR: Matthew Falkenberg Doing improvisational theatre is a constant mental exercise. Second-guessing your own offers and trying to plan out scenes in your head are bad habits improvisers can easily fall into without even realizing it. This workshops focuses on letting go mental blocks that can clog an improviser's head by focusing on quick, truthful reactions in the moment. |
SAT 9/19 4:00PM-6:00PM |
|
WORKSHOP 1: ADVANCED IMPROV WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: Greg Tuculescu Now that you're versed in basic agreement, learn how to isolate the comedic elements of scene -- namely, "the unusual thing." By coming to an agreement over what is unusual in a scene, actors can help each other create and expand a comedic scene into a rich and full world. These same skills help to foster the unique ideas in any conversation, group brainstorming session or overall mission statement into richer, fuller views and philosophies. WORKSHOP 2: GAME OF THE SCENE INSTRUCTOR: Neil Casey Learn to improvise so that each of your scenes centers around its own comedic idea -- called the "game" of that scene. Using such strategies as identifying the first unusual thing, creating intelligent philosophies and yes-anding your partner's ideas to build rich and funny games for each of your scenes. WORKSHOP 3: INTRO TO LONGFORM INSTRUCTOR: Jonathon Garbrus For people who are well versed in short-form and other philosophies, this is a crash course in UCB's style of long form improvisation, performance in which a group of people mutually create interconnected scenes, on the spot, from a single audience suggestion. WORKSHOP 4: HAROLD WORKSHOP INSTRUCTOR: Chelsea Clarke Learn the structure and techniques of "The Harold," developed by Del Close, as performed and practiced by top UCB instructors. Perfect for helping form a group mind for your ensemble and elevating your scene work by performing multiple beats, the Harold is a long form that builds on and explores comedic connections in our world. WORKSHOP 5: STORY STRUCTURE INSTRUCTOR: Mike Fly This workshop will focus on exploring differing types of story structure and narration and their application in long form improvisation. Participants will translate basic story elements and the classic 3-act hero's journey into fully realized, non-linear pieces. This workshop is designed for participants wanting to expand their understanding of narrative storytelling and is best suited for those with long form experience (but all are welcome) WORKSHOP 6: SUBTEXT, SYMBOLISM, AND THEME INSTRUCTOR: Shana Merlin Take your improv to the next level of sophistication in this workshop on subtext, symbolism, and theme. Make your characters more dynamic and complex by playing contrary objectives at the same time. Explore the use of personal symbols to tell your character's story. Find ways to explore theme and meaning in your shows without being heavy handed or cheesy. With these tools you can give your shows the same richness you enjoy in your favorite plays and films without sacrificing any of the comedy. |

WORKSHOP 1: UCB INTENSIVE (PUBLIC) INSTRUCTOR: Neil Casey Learn to improvise so that each of your scenes centers around its own comedic idea -- called the "game" of that scene and apply it to the structure and techniques of "The Harold," as performed and practiced by top UCB instructors. By coming to an agreement over what is unusual in a scene, actors can help each other create and expand a comedic scene into a rich and full world. Perfect for helping form a group mind for your ensemble and elevating your scene work by performing multiple beats, the Harold is a long form that builds on and explores comedic connections in our world. WORKSHOP 2: IMRPOVISATION FOR THE CAMERA (PUBLIC) INSTRUCTOR: Mike Fly Improvisation for the Camera will focus on 3 differing techniques for using improvisation on camera for performance, direction and story/plot development. Participants will see some examples of improvisation for camera, and will actively take part in shooting a piece. Please be prepared for the possibility of working outside. WORKSHOP 3: THE FUTURE (H.S. OUTREACH PROGRAM) INSTRUCTOR: Tony Lawry This workshop is designed for ages 13-18. The future of improvisation is in the hands of the youth. This workshop will fine tune and introduce teens to improv by highlighting childhood games as scene tools in long form improv. Teamwork and conversational improv will be a focal point. Young improvisers already play with a heightened energy. This workshop will help them hone it into their scenework. WORKSHOP A: ADVANCED WHERES/ACTION (JACKPIE EXCLUSIVE) INSTRUCTOR: Tim Orr & Ragina Saisi As improvisers, one of the ongoing and most challenging tasks is to create wheres and action. Just standing there and talking severely limits the ability to portray the full range of human experience. Improvisers can actually make an audience see things and places that aren't there on stage, if only they have the skills and commitment to make it happen. It is the truly magical part of improvisation! This course focuses on the five guidelines of Advanced Wheres/Action developed by Tim Orr through his experience performing and teaching. These techniques, used together, give the skills needed to create dynamic environments in any improv format. |
