BLACK BOX COMEDY TOURNAMENT


Sept. 9-10, 2011 – DramaTech Theater presents the fourth annual Black Box Comedy Tournament. Eight comedy teams will battle it out in a relentlessly assault of gut-busting hilarity. At the end of every match, the audience will decide which team advances and which one gets eliminated. The last team left standing will receive a coveted performance slot in the Black Box Comedy Festival Friday Big Show!!

TruHollywood Storytellers is an improvised VH1 Storytellers based off an audience suggestion of a fake band’s name. From there founding band members Kellan Meador and Russ Kirn delve into the life, times, and greatest hits from your favorite fictitious band.

Your Mom’s Mom will make you laugh in that uncomfortable way your own Grandma always has. We’ll put that plate of warm, delicious smelling cookies out to entice, but have no problem smacking the crap out of your hand as soon as you reach for them. They’re not ready yet. Why don’t you go outside and play for a while? Alright, so the metaphor got away from us a little bit there, but we think you’ll really enjoy our harold style, group edit, audience inspired improv.

Let’s Try This! is the offical theatre improv troupe of DramaTech. The troupe was formed in the summer of 1989, inspired by workshops taught by Robert Lowe, who has remained a constant source of help and inspiration to us. As our name suggests we will try many things, from games to short scenes to long-form to what-in-the-world-was-that? We have many directors with different styles amongst ourselves making our shows quite diverse, however we all share a common belief in being in the moment and making our partners perfect.

BBCT RULES

  1. TEAMS :: Any groups not otherwise performing in the Black Box Comedy Festival can compete in the tournament. Teams may consist of 1-8 people.
  2. SHOWS :: Each match will pit two teams against each other. The winning team advances to the next round. The losing team is eliminated.
  3. PERFORMANCE :: During a BBCT show each team gets a 15min. performance set followed by a 10min. joint performance set. Each set is strictly timed.
  4. WINNING :: There will be one Representative Judge and Two Independent Judges. At the end of the match the audience votes via applause. The Representative Judge must vote the same way as the audience. The two Independent Judges each will use their improv wisdom to determine which team to vote for. The team with the most votes from the judges wins.
  5. PLAY NICE :: This is meant to be a friendly competition. Harassment and intimidation during, before or after the performance by either the performers or members of the audience will not be tolerated. The host will not hesitate to eject people or disqualify teams for such behavior.
  6. STACKING THE AUDIENCE :: Stacking the audience is not only allowed, it’s encouraged.
